You'd like to invite me to spend money on books about a culture and people that are technically irrelevant to me (unless we're talking about peanut butter, thank you George Washington Carver). It's not that I don't care about the history and the struggles of our African-American brethren, I do. BUT I DON'T WANT TO BUY A BUNCH OF NEW BLACK PEOPLE BOOKS SO THAT I CAN FEEL GOOD ABOUT MYSELF. "Oh look! He's reading a book written by W.E.B. DuBois! He must be a wonderful person with lots of black friends. Let's pat him on the back and give him a high five!"

Just wanted to point out that the only reason I read "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" is because I'm an ornithologist on the weekends.
haha.
But seriously though: I certainly don't think anything of it if I DO see someone reading a book like that, but that's the point! And, obviously, there's absolutely NOTHING wrong with it if someone IS so inclined to study black history during black history month. Good for them!
I guess my whole rant (and it was just a rant) was against marketers and other bright-eyed and bushy-tailed capitalists telling me (quite a few times) that it is Black History Month and that I should therefore feel obligated to buy a book on it from them.
Nay, I say! Nay!
